  4. “Shu Wu Kong” did a lot of bad things so the Heavenly Emperor asks the Buddha for help, who crushes Wu Kong underneath the Mountain of Five Elements. He is trapped there for 500 years until “Tang San Zang” rescues “Shu Wu Kong” from the mountain. They meet “Zhu Ba Jie” and “Sha Wu Jing” later who become “San Zang's” disciples. Throughout the journey, “Tan San Zang” is regularly attacked and kidnapped by demons as they want to gain immortality by eating his flesh. Then the book describes about the types of difficulties meet on their journey, the demons they fight, and all the adventures they have on the way. “Shu Wu Kong” is the strongest of the group and the main fighting power, but he faces conflicts with his master a few times because of his tendency to kill.”Zhu Ba Jie” is significantly weaker, and he is also lazy, greedy and lustful, though he is a great help when fighting demons in rivers or seas. He and “Shu Wu Kong” are constantly quarrelling and “Shu Wu Kong” likes to play tricks on him. “Sha Wu Jing” is the weakest one, but he is hardworking and patient. He also does his best to help his elder brothers. They finally reach the Western Heavens and bring back the scriptures to China. At the end of the story, “Tang San Zang” and his disciples attain Buddhahood.

  6. Adding on to my earlier post, ( computer got some problems )

What interest me most is that this story has many wonderful characters that really excites my fantasy. I thought that this story would be the same as other boring chinese texts but I was quite wrong. When i read it I was quite amazed and could not stop reading it. It is not a wonder why it has still remained so popular among the later generations.

  7. Summary of Journey to the West:

Sun Wukong was born from a stone. He wanted to be like the immortals and escape death. He was extremely smart and capable, and learned all the magic tricks from a master Taoist.
He claimed to be king in defiance of the Great Emperor of Jade. That act of high treason invited the relentless scourge of the Heavenly army. Eventually, the heavenly army caught him, only after many a battle, with the help of all the god warriors. However, all methods of execution failed. One attempt to kill him actually gave him a pair of fiery golden crystal eyes that can see through what people normally cannot.
The Buddha moved a great mountain known as the Mount of Five Fingers to fall upon him. Sun Wukong survived but he could not move! Five hundred years later, Tripitaka saved him. Buddha had arranged for the Monkey King to become his disciple and escort him, along with two other disciples, Pigsy and Sandy, who later came across.
They then work their way to the Western Paradise and the Buddhist sutras. Along the way Tripitaka is often attacked and kidnapped by demons as they want to gain immortality by eating his flesh. As many years pass, they learn to face challenges by working together. When a task is too hard, the goddess Guan Yin helps out. After traveling for 14 years and 108,000 miles, Monkey and his friends reach the Western Paradise. Buddha gives them the sacred sutras to take back to China. They each earned merit for doing good deeds. Buddha rewards them for their loyalty and hard work—with immortal life and happiness.

  8. Journey to the west is one of the most famous Chinese legends or myths around Asia. It is one of the Four Great Classics of Chinese literature and was published during the Ming dynasty. The novel is about a Buddhist monk journey to India in order to obtain the Buddhist religious texts called the sutras. He is accompanied by his three disciples, Sun Wu Kong, Zhu Ba Jie and Sa Wu Jie. During the journey, they encountered lots of magic, demons, gods, immortals and many more. Journey to the West has a strong background in Chinese folk religion, Chinese mythology and value systems. It is an adventure story, a dispenser of spiritual insight, and an extended allegory in which the group of pilgrims journeying toward India stands for the individual journeying toward enlightenment.

  9. Journey to the west is a fictional novel. It has four main characters which are, Sun Wu Kong, which was trapped by Buddha for rebelling against Heaven. He is the most intelligent and violent among disciples. He can only be controlled by a magic gold band that the Bodhisattva has placed around his head, which causes him bad headaches when XuanZang chants certain magic words.

Zhu BaJie, banished to the mortal realm for flirting with the Princess of the Moon, Chang er. He is characterized by his insatiable appetites for food and sex, and is constantly looking for a way out of his duties, which causes significant conflict with Sun Wukong. But he is a reliable fighter.

Sha Wujing, banished to the mortal realm for dropping (and shattering) a crystal goblet of the Heavenly Queen Mother. He is a quiet but generally dependable character.

And a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's mount, a white horse. They were given a task and the four characters have agreed to help XuanZhang, as atonement for their past sins.

During their journey to the West, they are regularly attacked and kidnapped by demons as they want to gain immortality by eating XuanZhang flesh. And among them the strongest is Sun WuKong but he faces conflicts with his master and has the tendency to kill Zhu BaJie, as he is the weakest , greedy and lazy though he is a great help when it comes to fighting demons in the sea or rivers. Wukong always quarrel with Zhu BaJie and play tricks on him. And among them the weakest is Sha Wujing but he is hardworking and patient, and always do his best to help his older brother.

And so after defeating the demons, the reach their destination which is Vulture Peak and obtain the buddhahood. And after that, they return to Tang Empire and the four characters, all receive a reward from the heaven

  11. The novel is a mythologized legend around the Buddhist monk Xuan Zang's pilgrimage to India during the Tang dynasty in order to obtain Buddhist religious texts called sutras.
Sun Wu Kong was born from a stone. He wanted to be like the immortals and be free from death. He was extremely smart and capable, and learned all the magic tricks from a master Taoist. Using clouds as a vehicle, he can travel 180,000 miles a single somersault.
He claimed to be king in defiance of the Great Emperor of Jade—the only authority over heaven, the seas, the earth, and the subterranean world. The heavenly army subdued him, only after many a battle, with the help of all the god warriors. However, all methods of execution failed. One attempt to kill him actually gave him a pair of fiery golden crystal eyes that can see through what people normally cannot.
At last, the emperor asked Buddha for help. The Buddha moved a great mountain known as the Mount of Five Fingers to fall upon him. Still, the monkey survived the enormous weight and pressure, except he could not move! Five hundred years later, there came to his rescue the monk Xuan Zang. To insure that Xuan Zang could make the journey to the West to get the Buddhist scriptures, Buddha had arranged for the Monkey King to become his disciple and escort him, along with two other disciples they later came across.
Four of them work their way to the Western Paradise and the Buddhist sutras. Tall mountains, deep rushing rivers, and evil demons lie ahead. But Monkey is brave and smart, and he even learns to behave. They know this is an important mission. As many years pass, they learn to face challenges by working together. When a task is too hard, the goddess Guan Yin helps out. After traveling for 14 years and 108,000 miles, they reach their destination. Buddha gives them the sacred sutras to take back to China. Buddha knows that the travelers suffered on the journey, but they also learned something new about themselves. Plus, they each earned merit for doing good deeds. Buddha rewards them for their loyalty and hard work—with immortal life and happiness.
