The three kingdoms period is a period in the history of China. It is part of an era of disunity called the Six Dynasties. In a strist academis sense it refers to teh period between the foundation of Wei in 220 and the conquest of the Wu by the Jin dynasty in 280. But many Chinese historians extended the start of this period back to the uprising of the Yellow Turbans in 184. The three kingdoms were Wei, Shu and Wu. To help us understand this states from other chinese characters, historians add a relevant character. Wei is known as Cao Wei, Shu as Shu Han and Wu as Dong Wu or Eastern Wu. The term Three Kingdoms is somewhat a mistranslation since each state was eventually headed not by kings but by an emperor who claim legitimate succession from the Han Dynasty. From 184-220, there was chaotic infighting between warlords in various parts of China. From 220 to 263, there was a more militarily stable arrangement between Wei, Shu and Han. Techonology advanced during this period. Zhuge Liang invented the wooden ox, like a wheelbarrow. Ma Jun, in Wei, invented a hydraulic-powered mechanical puppet theatre for Emperor Ming of Wei. Inventions of the South Pointing Chariot which is a mechanically driven compass vehicle using differential gear designs the first in the world, intricate hydraulic-powered and mechanically operated puppet theatre, the construction of square-pallet chain pumps meant for irrigation, invention of the Mantou, the landmine, a mysterious and efficient automatic transportation device which is sometimes identified with the wheelbarrow, the invention of the repeating crossbow and an early type of hot air balloon used for military signalling called the lantern. It was also turned in the fictional story known as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong during the Ming dynasty. Fictional accounts of the Three Kingdoms also play a significant role in East Asian culture. Books, TV serials, movies, cartoons and games are still regularly produced in China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.
